For my art I use mainly commercially available batiks, sometimes supplemented with sheer or organza. Every now and then, however, I cannot resist the urge to hand-dye, hand-paint or discharge cotton fabrics. The excitement of seeing colors come to life on a white piece of muslin or the surprise and awe when unfolding a tie-dyed or Shibori-discharged cloth drive me to make more and more and even more fabric. For me, creating my own fabric is a hopelessly addictive process (and I’m not seeking any cure!).

The techniques I use to transform individual pieces of fabric into fiber art include hand-piecing, machine-piecing, appliqué by hand or machine, and fusing fabrics. As an art quilter I enjoy the process of visualizing an idea with fabric first and then using this fabric “canvas” for a second time to quilt, hand-embroider and embellish it.

Typically, quilts consist of a top (either pieced or wholecloth), a batting and a backing, and all components are stitched together. My art quilts adhere to this traditional definition by having three layers quilted together (a requirement for some exhibitions). In my fabric compositions, however, I take the liberty to add or subtract layers to achieve the tactile quality I need. I stitch through only the top or the top and interfacing before adding the backing to finish the piece. In some cases I don’t quilt at all but add texture and visual depth through embroidery and embellishment. Occasionally, my art is mounted or framed, thereby putting the emphasis on the fine art quality of my work.

No matter if art quilt or fabric composition I enjoy the colors, texture and malleability of the medium fiber!
