ARTQUILTSrivers - a joint project of PAQA-South and TAQS

ARTQUILTSrivers is a project between the Professional Art Quilters Alliance - South (PAQA-South) and the Taiwan Art Quilt Society (TAQS), lead by Ann Flaherty from PAQA-South and Lin Hsin-Chen from TAQS. There will be a total of 12 art quilts, 6 of which are created by selected members of PAQA-South and six created by members of TAQS. All art quilts will have a defined size and the interpretation of the theme "rivers" is up to the individual artist. However, there is a river flowing through each art quilt at a pre-determined position. So when hung together, all art quilts will have a continuous river visually connecting the individual pieces.
Artists from both organizations were invited to submit their applications for the project, but only six artists from each organization were selected. For PAQA-South, Ann Flaherty and Kris Carmichael, Director of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center in Cary, NC, took over the responsibility of chosing the artists. PAQA-South will be represented by Mary Beth Bellah, Denny Webster, Eileen Williams, Ann Flaherty, Christine Zoller and myself. Contributing TAQS-members are Lin Hsin-Chen, Wang Li-Chun, Lin Mei-Hui, Chuang Huei-Lan, Huang Ming-Mei and Chen Yen-Chiu.
ARTQUILTSrivers will be on exhibition at the National Tainan Living Art Center, Tainan City, Taiwan (Republic of China), opening on August 11, 2012. Subsequently, the art quilts will be on display in Cary with the opening scheduled for January 7, 2013.
I will post updates when they become available.

In this exhibition members of PAQA-South explore various ways of repurposing. Some artists repurposed finds from the thrift store or yard sales, others created art quilts out of garments, and some modified older art pieces and gave them a new life.
My contributions to this exhibition are two journals with fabric covers.

Notebook "Washers Repurposed"
Notebook "Rusted Circles"
Washers Repurposed
Rusted Circles
For the notebook "Washers Repurposed" black muslin was wrapped around a pole according to the Arashi Shibori technique. It was then discharged with dishwasher gel which turned the black dye to orange-brown. On another piece of black muslin I created circles by dipping stainless steel washers from the hardware store into the dishwasher gel and then placing them onto the fabric.
The fabric cover was hand-embroidered and embellished with stainless steel washers.

The notebook "Rusted Circles" was created from rusted fabric using rusted metal disks and wire spools which I had found while treasure hunting at a metal scrap yard. The fabric cover was machine-sewn and hand-embroidered.
You can find these and other journals on my page "functional art".

Filling the Void
Artist Statement
The loss of a beloved family member left "holes" in my life. Over time I filled some of these voids with cherished memories which helped me to move on, and yet, life will never be the same.
